Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Trigger point dry needling is an indispensable tool in treating myofascial (muscle and fascia) pain. It works by eliminating hyperactive “trigger points” that refer pain across nerve, muscle, and connective tissue in predictable patterns.

Dry needling refers to the insertion of very fine acupuncture needles in order to treat hypersensitive areas of muscle and soft tissue known as “trigger points” that, when active, are painful or refer pain to other areas.

Studies into dry needling show that it can induce local tissue repair, and affects mechanisms in connective tissue and neuroendocrine function. When trigger points are “deactivated,” they normalize and become less irritable, with higher pain and inflammatory thresholds.

"...one of the best experiences ever."

" Summit was my first acupuncture experience and let me say it was one of the best experiences ever. It starts off with a welcoming environment at the front desk and continues with the providers as well. I was working with Jason this visit and his knowledge of the body and treatment techniques are amazing. He carefully explains all treatments and reasons behind the techniques, so you really feel comfortable with what he is doing. I felt amazing after the 1st visit and cannot wait to go back! Thank you, Summit! "

Dry Needling Benefits

Dry needling is particularly effective for addressing chronic pain and tension, as well as acute injuries. By targeting these specific trigger points, our skilled practitioners can facilitate the release of tight muscle fibers, promote blood flow to the area, and reduce local inflammation. This results in decreased pain, increased range of motion, and enhanced muscle function, contributing to overall improved well-being.

In many cases, dry needling can complement other therapies, such as orthopedic acupuncture, massage, and physical therapy. By combining these approaches, we can address the root cause of pain and dysfunction in a comprehensive manner. This integrated approach allows our patients to experience long-lasting relief and a quicker return to their daily activities and hobbies without discomfort.

Patient safety and comfort are always our top priorities at Summit Acupuncture. Our practitioners are well-trained in the proper application of dry needling techniques and strictly adhere to clean needle protocols. During the treatment, you may feel a mild sensation, such as a muscle twitch or ache, which typically dissipates shortly after the needle is removed. We are committed to ensuring that your dry needling experience is both effective and as comfortable as possible.

"...my pain drastically decreased."

" This place is a life saver! This summer I competed at the CrossFit Games, and shortly after I experienced a VERY painful shoulder injury. I lost complete range of motion of my left arm for a few days, I was extremely worried, scared , and started to think the worst. I tried massages, PT exercises with no pain or range of motion resolution. After one visit with Jason my pain drastically decreased. It was the first night I was able to sleep with out pain and finally regained my range of motion. It’s been slightly over a week now since my injury and I’m back to doing everything I love pain free. I can’t recommend Jason, along with the Summit Team enough. Worth every penny!!!! "

What Should I Expect During My Dry Needling Treatment?

At Summit Acupuncture in Philadelphia, we specialize in a unique and effective technique called dry needling. This treatment is designed to provide pain relief and help you regain function by targeting trigger points and tight muscles. In this section, we will guide you through what to expect during your dry needling treatment, ensuring you are well-prepared and informed.

Initial Consultation:
Before your dry needling treatment, our expert practitioners will conduct a thorough assessment of your condition, including your medical history, symptoms, and goals for treatment. This information will help us develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Preparation:
For your comfort, we recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment areas. If needed, we may provide draping to ensure your privacy during the session. That said, come as you are and don't worry too much about your attire. We have plenty of drapes to help if you're coming from work or a workout!

Dry Needling Procedure:
Dry needling involves the insertion of fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles directly into tight bands of muscle or trigger points. Our experienced practitioners will gently insert the needles, often with a slight tapping motion. You may feel a mild discomfort, pressure, or a "twitch response" as the needle reaches the target area. This sensation is typically brief and indicates that the treatment is effectively targeting the muscle fibers. Most patients report this sensation feels odd and achey but not extremely painful.

Duration:
A dry needling treatment generally lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of your condition and the number of areas to be treated. Our practitioners will continuously monitor your comfort and response to the treatment, making adjustments as needed to optimize pain relief and effectiveness.

Post-Treatment Care:
After the treatment, you may experience some temporary soreness or stiffness in the treated areas. This is a normal response and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. To aid in recovery and promote optimal results, we recommend gentle stretching, staying hydrated, and applying heat. Generally we do not recommond ice after dry needling, motor point acupuncture, or traditional acupuncture. Heat is best and can be applied via epsom salt bath soak, heating pad, or simply a hot shower. We almost always recommond Evil Bone Water or Dr. Guo's 37 Healing Salve post treatment when we are treating any pain condition. These supplements are available at our office for purchase after your visit.

Follow-Up Dry Needling Appointments:
Depending on your specific condition and treatment goals, a series of dry needling sessions may be recommended. Our practitioners will work with you to develop a follow-up plan that is best suited to your needs, ensuring you experience long-lasting pain relief and improved function.

At our orthopedic acupuncture clinic, we are dedicated to providing you with the highest standard of care using evidence-based techniques like dry needling. Our goal is to help you regain function and enjoy life free from pain. If you're interested in learning more or scheduling a consultation, please contact us today.
