Frequently Asked Questions
What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is unique in that it influences and improves the body’s functions by promoting the natural self-healing of the body’s cells and tissues. Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats many conditions. We specialize in treating musculoskeletal disorders (back pain, neck pain, etc.), migraine headaches, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. In addition, many patients come to Summit to treat their digestive disorders, gynecological disorders, post-surgery trauma, PTSD, and many more. Curious if Acupuncture can help with a condition? Just ask!
When should I get acupuncture?
Acupuncture can start to relieve your symptoms immediately. You can come for a treatment before or after work, a workout/yoga/run, and most anything else!
Why choose acupuncture over other medical modalities?
First, there are almost no side effects when properly administered and will only work to enhance other medical treatments. Second, we treat patients holistically and seek to treat the root cause of your health concerns while treating your symptoms for fast relief.
How does acupuncture work?
Quite simply, acupuncture is nervous system medicine. Acupuncture works by stimulating nerves and improving blood and lymphatic flow in particular areas of the body. By calming the sympathetic nervous system, increasing blood and lymph flow, and releasing endorphins our bodies are able to heal themselves. This process reduces inflammation and resets nerves that are misfiring to stop pain in its tracks. This helps to re-establish healthy function in all of our body systems. Think of the needles as a gentle suggestion to your body of what it should be doing.
Do the needles hurt?
Not really. The needles we use are much smaller and completely different from the ones you are used to at the doctor's office. They are about as thin as your hair. The experience of being needled is totally unique and rarely painful. Sometimes you'll feel a small pinch, but most of the time it's painless. We have plenty of patients who worried about this at first and continue with treatments and love acupuncture... so you're not alone.
Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?
Nope! You can believe whatever you’d like. Studies have been done on exactly this phenomenon and patients do well whether or not they believe. Many of our skeptical patients often become the biggest fans and love the ways acupuncture can help them.
How many treatments do I need?
A majority of our patients will start to see results during, or soon after, the first treatment. Most patients will see a resolution or significant improvements in their health concerns between 4-12 treatments. We see patients one to three times a week, depending on what we are treating. We will talk to you about your personal treatment plan.
What is Dry Needling?
Trigger point dry needling is an indispensable tool in treating myofascial (muscle and fascia) pain. It works by eliminating hyperactive “trigger points” that refer pain across nerve, muscle, and connective tissue in predictable patterns. Dry needling refers to the insertion of very fine acupuncture needles in order to treat hypersensitive areas of muscle and soft tissue known as “trigger points” that, when active, are painful or refer pain to other areas. Studies into dry needling show that it can induce local tissue repair, and affects mechanisms in connective tissue and neuroendocrine function. When trigger points are “deactivated,” they normalize and become less irritable, with higher pain and inflammatory thresholds.
Does Dry Needling hurt?
Patients generally tolerate Dry Needling very well! The sensation elicited from the Dry Needling technique can feel sore as the procedure is done. When Dry Needling is applied properly the amount of discomfort is greatly reduced. We pride ourself on our superb Dry Needling technique that ensures the most comfortable treatment possible. While the procedure may induce soreness, Dry Needling provides immediate results including significant reductions in pain and improvements in the mobility of joints.
What does massage therapy treat?
Massage therapy is primarily used to treat physical aches and pains. Massage therapy relieves symptoms of acute and chronic pain conditions, sports injuries, and traumatic injuries.
When should I get a massage?
After an initial series of massages to improve your condition, we recommend a maintenance schedule of one massage every month. This is a great way to stay loose and pain-free and is a preventive measure against future aches and pains
How does massage work?
Massage therapy increases blood flow to tight muscles and improves circulation of the lymphatic system. Providing fresh, nutrient-dense, oxygenated blood to tight or painful areas helps the body to begin the healing process. Massage therapy unlocks tight muscles and helps to relieve the pain that our client experiences. Our lymphatic system is responsible for detoxifying our body and providing immune support. Because massage therapy helps move lymphatic fluid, this aids our client's ability to detoxify easier and have stronger immune systems.
What is the difference between Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, and Swedish Massage?
Swedish uses the lightest pressure (up to 3/10 pressure scale). This is typically a full-body massage that uses gentle touch to relax the nervous system.
Deep Tissue uses stronger pressure (up to 7/10 pressure scale). Typically done on regions of the body, this massage type is a great option for injuries and chronic pain alike.
Sports Massage uses the strongest pressure (up to 10/10 pressure scale). Our therapist considers all surrounding tissues but will focus on one specific condition or joint. This type of massage is great for sports injuries, traumatic injuries, or severe chronic pain.
Should I tip my Massage Therapist?
While tipping is not required, many clients choose to tip around 20% to their massage therapist. 100% of tips go directly to your massage therapist for their hard work. (FYI our Acupuncturists do not accept tips, only google reviews!)
Are Massage Therapy packages available?
Summit offers a 4-pack of each style of massage for 10% off and a 6-pack of each style of massage for 15% off. All 6-pack options will save you over $100!
